Japan's first modern bolt-action service rifle, designed by Colonel Nariakira Arisaka. A Mauser-influenced design in the mild 6.5mm cartridge that proved effective in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). The hook safety on the bolt was distinctive and ergonomically awkward. The 6.5mm was accurate and mild-recoiling, though later considered inadequate for long-range performance against entrenched positions.
