The Arisaka Type 99 replaced the Type 38 as Japan's standard service rifle in WWII, chambered in the more powerful 7.7x58mm cartridge. Produced from 1939 through the end of the war, quality deteriorated severely from 1944 onward as Japan's wartime resource crisis deepened. Early-production Type 99s are excellent rifles; late-war examples used crude machining and unarmed stocks. The Type 99 featured a monopod under the barrel and anti-aircraft lead sights as standard.
