The 96FS is the .40 S&W variant of the 92FS, developed as US law enforcement agencies transitioned from 9mm to .40 S&W in the early 1990s. The frame is widened slightly to accept the larger cartridge and the magazine capacity drops to 11 rounds. Mechanically it shares the 92FS short-recoil tilting barrel and open-slide design. Many agencies that standardized on the 92FS simply ordered 96FS frames to maintain parts commonality.
