The M9A1 was developed for the United States Marine Corps, who required a rail-equipped variant for weapon-mounted lights. It adds a Picatinny rail on the dustcover, an aggressive front strap checkering, a beveled magazine well, and ships with sand-resistant magazines. The USMC adopted the M9A1 in 2006 and it saw extensive service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The commercial 92A1 is the civilian analog.
