Designed to give French cavalry a simpler rifle than the complex Lebel, using a 3-round Mannlicher-style clip. The Berthier action was simpler and stronger than the Lebel, though its 3-round capacity was clearly inadequate. Evolved through the M1907/15 rifle and M1916 with an improved 5-round magazine. Used extensively in WWI.
