Boss & Co produced external-hammer side-by-side shotguns throughout the Victorian era, and the contemporary Boss workshop still accepts commissions for external-hammer guns as collector and display pieces. The Victorian external-hammer SxS represents the transition from percussion to centerfire cartridge technology and Boss's hammer guns from the 1870s–1890s are among the most beautifully finished examples of this type. Contemporary commissions are rare special orders.
