Designed by John Browning (who died before its completion) and finished by FN engineer Dieudonné Saive, the Hi-Power was the first modern high-capacity pistol. Its 13-round magazine capacity was double that of contemporary service pistols. Adopted by over 55 nations and used by both Allied and Axis forces simultaneously in WWII — FN produced it for Wehrmacht use under German occupation while the same design was produced by John Inglis & Company in Canada for Allied forces. The tilting-barrel Browning linkless cam system influenced virtually every subsequent service pistol design. Browning Arms sold the commercial version in the US. Production of the original design resumed by Springfield Armory in 2023.
