John Browning's recoil-operated water-cooled heavy machine gun, developed during WWI. Browning demonstrated it firing 20,000 rounds without stoppage in a government trial. Arrived too late to significantly impact WWI but served as the US heavy MG through WWII and Korea. The short-recoil, toggle-lock mechanism was more reliable than the Maxim. Production reached 68,000 by the Armistice.
