One of the most widely used Union cavalry carbines of the Civil War, with over 43,000 5th Model examples purchased by the government. Designed by Ambrose Burnside (later a Union general) before the war, the distinctive conical brass cartridge with a center fire hole was unique to this design. The 5th Model was the final and most refined version, the result of progressive improvements through four earlier patterns.
