The most produced automatic weapon of WWI, used by France, the US, and many Allied nations. Its distinctive crescent-shaped magazine accommodated the rimmed 8mm Lebel cartridge. Infamous for unreliability — the US .30-06 variant (M1918) was particularly poor and reportedly caused units to abandon it. Despite its reputation, the original 8mm variant performed acceptably when kept clean. Over 250,000 produced by war's end.
