The Colt Commander was developed in response to a US military request for a lighter, shorter service pistol chambered in 9mm Parabellum for possible NATO standardization. An aluminum-frame version of the 1911 in 9mm, it was the first production pistol to combine a lightweight alloy frame with a 9mm chambering in the 1911 design. The aluminum frame gave it the Lightweight Commander designation.
