The Colt New Service revolver adapted for .45 ACP cartridges using half-moon clips, pressed into emergency service alongside the S&W Model 1917 when 1911 pistol production could not meet WWI demand. Identical in concept to the S&W 1917 but built on the Colt New Service frame. Over 150,000 were purchased by the US government during WWI. Post-war, widely adopted by US police departments as surplus became available.
