The M1 Carbine was produced in larger numbers than any other US military small arm in WWII — over six million were made by ten different manufacturers including Inland, Rock-Ola, Underwood, and IBM. A lightweight semi-automatic carbine chambered in .30 Carbine, it was intended to replace the pistol for support troops but became widely used as a frontline weapon. Post-war commercial versions were produced by numerous companies and remain popular today. Colt produced commercial semi-auto versions post-WWII.
