The Colt Model 1877 Lightning was Colt's first double-action revolver, chambered in .38 Colt and later .32 Colt. A smaller-framed companion to the heavier Thunderer (.41 Colt), the Lightning represented Colt's entry into the double-action revolver market. Its action was complex and not as robust as later DA designs, but it pioneered the double-action concept in American production revolvers. Billy the Kid carried a Lightning or Thunderer.
