The Colt Model 1900 was John Browning's first semi-automatic pistol to go into production, chambered in the newly developed .38 ACP cartridge. It established the basic tilting-barrel, locked-breech design that Browning would refine into the M1911. The Model 1900 used a sight-safety mechanism on the rear sight and was purchased in limited quantities by the US Army and Navy for field trials. Only about 3,500 were made, making it a rare early example of the Browning-Colt pistol lineage.
