The Colt New Service was the largest double-action revolver in the Colt catalog, chambered in calibers from .38 Special to .45 ACP. It was the standard US military revolver in WWI and served as the Army and Navy sidearm when the M1911 supply was insufficient. The "Model 1917" designation was applied to New Service revolvers chambered in .45 ACP using half-moon clips, produced alongside the S&W Model 1917 to address M1911 pistol shortages. Nearly 360,000 were made.
