The Pattern 1914 Enfield, converted to .30-06 as the Model of 1917 Enfield for American WWI use, was the most-produced American rifle of WWI — over 2.2 million were made, exceeding M1903 production. Based on the Lee-Enfield-derived Pattern 1913, it used a stronger Mauser-type action and an aperture sight superior to the M1903's open sight. More American troops went to France with the M1917 Enfield than with the M1903 Springfield.
