The FN CAL was Belgium's first 5.56mm assault rifle, developed before the FNC and intended to replace the FAL in Belgian service. Chambered in 5.56x45mm with a gas-operated rotating bolt, it proved expensive to manufacture and problematic in service, leading to its replacement by the FNC. Limited numbers were exported.
