The H&K G3 was the West German service rifle from 1959 through 1997, when it was replaced by the G36. Based on the CETME rifle design (itself derived from the WWII StG 45), the G3 used H&K's roller-delayed blowback action in 7.62x51mm NATO. Over 7 million were produced and it was adopted by over 40 nations. The semi-automatic civilian PTR-91 and HK91 are the primary US market equivalents. The G3 action formed the basis for the MP5 and PSG-1 sniper rifle.
