The SP89 is the semi-automatic pistol version of the MP5K, imported to the US briefly in 1989 before being banned under sporting purpose restrictions. The 4.53-inch barrel and pistol configuration made it the most compact factory MP5 derivative available to civilians. Without a stock, it qualifies as a pistol rather than an SBR. Fewer than 2,000 are estimated to have been imported, making it among the rarest HK collector pieces in American hands.
