The 450 Nitro Express was the first successful smokeless-powder cartridge developed for double rifles, and Holland & Holland's Royal chambered for it in the years around the turn of the twentieth century represents the birth of the modern double rifle. Banned in British India and Sudan in 1907, the 450 NE Royal was superseded in new production by 465 NE and 470 NE alternatives, but a small number of 450 NE Royals were built before the ban and survive as important historical artifacts.
