The 450 Nitro Express was one of the first successful smokeless-powder big-bore cartridges and Rigby chambered their bolt-action Big Game Rifle for it in the pre-war period for clients who wanted magazine capacity combined with traditional double-rifle stopping power. The 450 NE was banned from India and Sudan in 1907 but remained legal in much of Africa, sustaining demand for the bolt-action version.
