The Springfield Model 1892 Krag-Jørgensen was the first US military bolt-action rifle chambered for a smokeless powder cartridge, the .30-40 Krag. It replaced the Trapdoor Springfield but was itself replaced by the M1903 after only a decade. The Krag's unusual horizontal rotary magazine loaded from the right side was distinctive. American troops carried Krags in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, where their slower bolt operation compared to Spanish Mausers influenced the adoption of the M1903.
