The US Army's first bolt-action magazine rifle with a distinctive horizontal rotary magazine. Replaced the single-shot Trapdoor Springfield but was obsoleted within 10 years by the Spanish-American War experience. The 5-round rotary magazine could not be loaded with a stripper clip — a fatal tactical disadvantage versus the Mauser 1893. Used by Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders at San Juan Hill.
