The MAS 36 is the last bolt-action rifle adopted as a primary service weapon by a major military power. Chambered in the proprietary 7.5x54mm French cartridge, it features a forward-locking bolt with a distinctive rear-swept bolt handle and no manual safety. Issued through the end of WWII and into early colonial conflicts, many examples were later converted to 7.62x51mm NATO.
