The Bolo Mauser (Bolo from Bolshevik) is a short-barreled, small-grip variant of the C96 Broomhandle produced primarily in the early 1920s for commercial export to Soviet Russia and Eastern Europe. The Bolsheviks and Red Army purchased thousands for issue to political commissars and officers. The shorter grip frame accommodated smaller hands and reduced overall size. American surplus dealers imported many in the 1920s, creating the "Bolo Mauser" nickname in the US market.
