The Gewehr 88, also called the Commission Rifle, was adopted by Germany as a transitional design that introduced the 8mm Mauser cartridge (then smokeless powder). It was not a true Mauser design but a commission-produced rifle. It bridged the gap between the Model 71 and the Gewehr 98. The G88 saw WWI service in secondary roles and was exported widely to Ottoman Turkey, China, and Ethiopia.
