Germany's first smokeless powder rifle, hurriedly designed by a military committee (not Mauser) to counter the French Lebel. Uses a different bolt system than later Mausers, with the cartridge fed from a Mannlicher-style clip. Chambered in 8x57mm I (the original smaller bore), later rechambered to 8x57mm IS. Obsolete by the Gewehr 98 but millions were used in WWI and beyond.
