The Mauser C96, universally known as the Broomhandle for its distinctive grip, was one of the first successful semi-automatic pistols in history. Chambered in 7.63mm Mauser, it fed from an integral box magazine forward of the trigger guard loaded via stripper clip. The C96 saw service in both World Wars, colonial conflicts, and was widely sold commercially. Winston Churchill carried one at Omdurman. It was licensed and copied extensively in Spain and China.
