The Karabiner 98a was an intermediate-length carbine derivative of the Gewehr 98, issued to cavalry, artillery, and support troops during WWI. Shorter than the G98 but longer than the eventual K98k, it served as the bridge between the full-length service rifle and the WWII standard carbine. The 98a featured a straight bolt handle and sling attachment on the side of the stock.
