The Mosin-Nagant Model 1944 carbine was the final Soviet Mosin design, shortening the action further than the earlier M38 carbine and adding a permanently attached folding cruciform bayonet. Produced by Izhevsk from 1944 onward and by satellite nations post-war, the M44 served as a standard infantry weapon through the early Cold War. The folding bayonet eliminated the need to carry a separate bayonet — a practical wartime design decision.
