Henry Peabody's falling-block action, modified by Friedrich von Martini (who added a coil mainspring and internal cocking indicator), became one of the most widely exported military rifle actions of the 1870s-1880s. Used by Turkey (the primary customer), Romania, Spain, and Switzerland before the Martini was adopted by Britain as the Martini-Henry. The Turkish Peabody-Martini was used in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78).
