The Ruger Security Six was Ruger's first double-action service revolver, chambered in .357 Magnum and designed to compete with the Smith & Wesson K-frame and Colt Official Police for law enforcement contracts. It became popular with many small police departments and rural sheriffs' offices who valued its robustness and lower cost compared to S&W. Over 1.2 million Security Sixes were produced. The Police Service Six (fixed sights) and Speed Six (round butt) were companion variants.
