The Smith & Wesson Model 27 is the original .357 Magnum revolver — the gun that created the Magnum era in handguns. Introduced in 1935 as the ".357 Magnum" (before model numbers were used), it was the most powerful production handgun in the world at introduction. Built on S&W's N-frame (large) with extensive hand-finishing and polishing — early examples were essentially bespoke firearms. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover ordered one of the first examples. The revolver that defined what a premium American handgun could be.
