The Model 696 was S&W's L-frame .44 Special revolver, produced from 1997 to 2002. The 5-shot cylinder accommodates the larger .44 Special case in the L-frame. The 3-inch barrel is the primary configuration. The .44 Special offers a mild recoil experience in a big-bore caliber with excellent terminal performance from well-designed loads.
