The M1A1 was the folding-stock paratrooper variant of the M1 Garand, designed for airborne use by Army Rangers and paratroopers. The standard M1 stock was replaced with a metal folding skeleton stock, allowing the rifle to be packed into a jump bag. Only about 40,000 were made — significantly fewer than the standard M1 — and they are among the most sought WWII American rifle variants.
