The M1903 Springfield was the primary US infantry rifle of WWI and early WWII, before being superseded by the M1 Garand in frontline service. The rifle is based on the Mauser 98 action — so closely that Springfield Armory paid royalties to Mauser until WWI interrupted payments. The M1903A3 (1942) simplified production with stamped components. The M1903A4 with Weaver 330 scope was the US standard sniper rifle through the Korean War. Springfield Armory, Remington, and Smith Corona all produced variants.
