Stevens Arms produced the most widely sold line of inexpensive single-shot target and small-game rifles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The No. 44 Ideal was their signature falling-block target rifle, available in a vast array of calibers and configurations. More small-game hunters and beginning target shooters learned to shoot with Stevens single-shots than any other rifle of the era. J. Stevens Arms was eventually acquired by Savage Arms in 1920.
