The Steyr GB (Gas Braked) was an Austrian service pistol with an unusual operating principle — a gas port ahead of the chamber vented propellant gas into an annular cylinder around the barrel, slowing the slide's initial rearward movement and reducing felt recoil. This gas-delayed blowback system allowed a fixed barrel for accuracy. The GB was evaluated by the US military in the XM9 trials but lost to the Beretta 92F. It was adopted by Austrian police in limited numbers.
