The Sturmgewehr 44 was the world's first modern assault rifle — the weapon that defined the assault rifle concept and whose legacy directly produced the AK-47 and influenced the M16 program. Chambered in the intermediate 7.92x33mm Kurz cartridge, it combined the accuracy of a rifle at medium range with the rapid fire of a submachine gun. Over 400,000 were produced by late in WWII. The StG 44 is the gun from which all modern assault rifles descend.
