The Tokarev SVT-40 was the Soviet Union's semi-automatic service rifle of WWII, intended to replace the Mosin-Nagant. While technically capable, it proved difficult to maintain and clean in field conditions, and poor soldier training resulted in its being pulled back in favor of the simpler Mosin. It was used extensively by Soviet Navy infantry and snipers. Finnish troops who captured SVT-40s prized them as superior to their own rifles.
