The Tokarev TT-33 was the standard Soviet military sidearm from 1933 through the 1950s, serving through WWII and the early Cold War. Designed by Fedor Tokarev, it was based loosely on the Browning 1911 action but used a simpler locking system and lacked a thumb safety. Chambered in the high-velocity 7.62x25mm cartridge, the TT-33 was powerful, reliable, and easy to manufacture. It was produced in enormous quantities and copied by numerous Soviet-aligned nations.
