The Walther P38 was adopted as the standard German service pistol to supplement and eventually replace the P08 Luger. It introduced double-action/single-action operation and a visible loaded-chamber indicator to military pistol design — features that became standard on countless subsequent designs. Produced by Walther, Mauser, and Spreewerk during WWII, over one million were manufactured. The P38 proved more reliable and easier to manufacture than the Luger it replaced.
