The Winchester Model 1886 was John Browning's first lever-action design for Winchester, created to handle the powerful .45-70 Government and other large centerfire cartridges that the earlier 1873 and 1876 actions could not safely contain. Its vertical locking-bolt design was far stronger than the toggle-link action of earlier Winchesters. It became the preferred lever-action of big-game hunters and was Theodore Roosevelt's favorite rifle.
