A redesign of the Lee-Enfield with a stronger Mauser-style action and better aperture sights, developed pre-war as a potential SMLE replacement. More accurate than the SMLE but slower to operate. Manufactured by Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone for Britain. When the US entered WWI in 1917, the action was rechambered to .30-06 and became the M1917 — the most produced US rifle of WWI, outnumbering the Springfield 1903.
