The M14 was the US military service rifle from 1957 to 1969, replacing the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine. A modernized Garand design with a detachable 20-round magazine and select-fire capability, it was chambered in the new 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. The M14 saw heavy use in Vietnam but was replaced by the M16 for jungle warfare. It returned to service as a sniper and designated marksman platform and continues in use as the M21 and M25. Civilian semi-auto versions are popular.
