The Valmet M76 is the Finnish military's AK-design semi-automatic rifle exported to the US in limited quantities before the 1989 import ban. Finland licensed and significantly improved the AK design, adding a better trigger, superior metallurgy, and the option for a synthetic or wooden stock. The M76 in 5.56 NATO was the export/commercial variant. Valmet later merged into Sako.
