France adopted this pistol cartridge in 1935 for the MAS 35 semi-automatic pistol, which replaced various older French military handguns. Lower velocity than contemporary military cartridges, the 7.65 MAS remained in French service through the Algerian War before being replaced by 9mm Parabellum.
