History: Portugal adopted the Kropatschek bolt-action rifle in 1886, chambered for this cartridge, which was among the first countries to adopt a small-bore repeating military rifle. Used in Portuguese colonial campaigns in Africa. Replaced by the Mauser in 1904 when Portugal adopted the 6.5x58mm Portuguese cartridge.
