Iver Johnson Arms

Overview

Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works was an American manufacturer founded in 1871 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts by Norwegian immigrant Iver Johnson. The company became one of the largest American handgun manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, producing affordable revolvers, break-action shotguns, and later semi-automatic pistols. Their Safety Automatic Revolver introduced the hammer-the-frame transfer bar — a genuine safety innovation that became standard across the industry. Iver Johnson revolvers were ubiquitous in American homes from the 1880s through the 1950s. The original company went through several ownership changes and a final closure; the brand was revived in 2006 as Iver Johnson Arms Inc. making AR-pattern rifles and 1911s.
